The timing of weight-loss after surgery varies from patient to patient. It usually depends on the type of procedure (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric bands or sleeve gastrectomy), the patient’s age, starting weight, activity and adherence to the program.

Most Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients lose the majority of weight in the first 18 months while it make take up to three years for adjustable gastric band patients to lose the majority of their weight. For sleeve patients, weight loss is usually a little bit more rapid than the band patient, but not as rapid as the gastric bypass patient.
