The Sleeve is another surgical weight-loss procedure option. During this procedure, the surgeon staples off and removes about 85% of the stomach. The patient is then left with a very small stomach. This procedure assists in losing weight by restriction, meaning it limits the amount of food that can be taken in at one time. The surgery typically takes about one hour and is performed laparoscopically.
Minimally Invasive Sleeve Gastrectomy
At Colorado Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Richard Tillquist performs the sleeve gastrectomy (also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG)) as a minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery, meaning the procedure is done through small incisions with the aid of a tiny camera. In comparison to a traditional or open procedure, the laparoscopic procedure has many benefits, including:
Following Surgery
Post-surgery, Sleeve patients lose weight because their food intake is limited.
Even though this is a restrictive procedure and not a mal-absorptive procedure, vitamin supplements are required. With such a low caloric intake the diet alone will not supply all the necessary vitamins.
Remember, surgery is only one component of weight loss. To be successful adherence to the diet and a regimented exercise program will be necessary. A good support system is also helpful in being successful with weight loss. Support can be achieved through family, friends, consistent follow-up with your surgeon and attending support groups. Colorado Bariatric Surgery offers free on-going support groups to all their patients.
